NVIDIA is venturing further into the realm of extraterrestrial computing by extending the reach of its computing chips. Space robotics startup Lunar Outpost has made an announcement that its next-generation lunar rover will incorporate NVIDIA's Jetson chip to manage its lidar system. Should the deployment prove successful, this chip will mark the first GPU to set foot on the lunar surface. Presently, Lunar Outpost is conducting a thorough assessment of the Jetson platform's pros and cons in comparison to existing aerospace computing platforms. Their objective is to adopt a more robust, GPU-powered computing system tailored for extreme environments. The lunar environment presents formidable challenges for electronic devices, demanding systems that can withstand prolonged lunar nights while maintaining extremely low power consumption. A successful operation will empower the lunar rover with enhanced autonomous capabilities, expediting environmental perception, data processing, and decision-making processes.
