Recently, a survey carried out by an affiliate of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions—the most prominent labor union group within Samsung Electronics—has unveiled that Samsung's foundry division is grappling with a significant threat of talent exodus. Among the 8,297 employees surveyed within this division, a staggering 81.5% indicated an intention to leave, with 62% expressing a "very high" inclination and 19% a "high" inclination. This figure dramatically surpasses the overall average of 49.5% in Samsung's semiconductor division and is more than twice the 32.7% departure intention observed in the memory business division. The survey highlighted that the pronounced disparity in bonus allocation stands as the primary catalyst for this mass exodus. In May of this year, Samsung Semiconductor's management and labor reached a consensus on an uncapped special performance bonus equivalent to 10.5% of the operating profit. Nevertheless, this bonus structure is segmented by business division, leading to a situation where foundry employees, despite having the same base annual salary, receive only one-third of the actual compensation enjoyed by their counterparts in the memory business. This pay gap has ignited considerable discontent among employees in non-memory business sectors concerning the fairness of their remuneration. At present, the union has convened a policy committee meeting to disclose the survey findings and has commenced deliberations on countermeasures, including salary negotiations for 2027, in an effort to mitigate the talent exodus crisis.
