On July 4 (local time), Micron Technology formally initiated the expansion of its Hiroshima-based factory in Japan, marking a significant move with a total investment of ¥1.5 trillion (equivalent to roughly $9.3 billion). This ambitious project is geared towards the production of cutting-edge memory chips, including High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), to cater to the burgeoning needs of the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. Production shipments are projected to commence in the summer of 2028. Additionally, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has pledged subsidies of up to ¥500 billion to support this venture.
