In a landmark achievement, Shanghai's Xuanxiang Technology has recently announced the successful development of the world's inaugural metasurface chip, engineered to produce a vast array of atomic optical tweezers on a million-scale. This milestone overcomes a critical optical barrier hindering the scalability of neutral-atom quantum computing, paving the way for essential hardware advancements necessary for achieving universal fault-tolerant quantum computing with a million qubits. The collaborative effort between Xuanxiang Technology and the atomic quantum computing enterprise Zhongqi Wuliang resulted in this breakthrough, with Xuanxiang Technology taking the lead in chip research and development, while Zhongqi Wuliang contributed the neutral-atom experimental framework and system-level validation.

The chip ingeniously incorporates hundreds of millions of nanoscale optical elements within a space no larger than a fingertip. It efficiently transforms a single laser beam into an expansive million-scale optical tweezer array. This innovation not only dramatically simplifies the intricacy of atomic optical tweezer systems but also confers industrial benefits in terms of standardized integration and the capacity for mass replication and iterative refinement.
