Microsoft has unveiled its latest quantum chip, Majorana 2. This cutting-edge chip incorporates an entirely new material composition and next-generation qubits, marking a significant leap in reliability—up to 1000 times more reliable than its forerunner. The qubit material has transitioned from an aluminum superconductor to lead, while the semiconductor active region now features a blend of indium arsenide and indium arsenide antimonide. These enhancements have extended the qubit lifespan to over 20 seconds, with some qubits even lasting for minutes, and have boosted stability by more than 1000 times. Microsoft is also on track to cut the development time for a prototype of a practical quantum computer in half, aiming for a release in 2029.
