On June 2, 2026, SINOPEC Shanghai Petrochemical Company, in partnership with the Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology, successfully surmounted significant technical hurdles in the wet-spinning process for producing T1000-grade high-performance carbon fiber, marking a leap into batch production. This particular carbon fiber is of the 12K small-tow type, meaning each tow comprises 12,000 individual filaments. To put it into perspective, the diameter of a single filament is a mere one-tenth that of a human hair, yet it boasts a tensile strength exceeding 6.5 gigapascals and a tensile modulus surpassing 300 gigapascals per filament. Such remarkable strength enables it to tow a medium-duty truck weighing around 10 tons, positioning it as a prime candidate for utilization in high-end sectors, notably aerospace.
