Recently, Tencent made an announcement that its self-developed codec series chip, the 'Canghai,' clinched the top position at the hardware video encoding competition hosted by Moscow State University on May 26. The Canghai chip excelled across all speed categories, ranging from 30 to 240fps, and across multiple evaluation metrics, including SSIM, PSNR, and VMAF. It surpassed its competitors by a significant margin, leading by over 30% in several key areas. The MSU competition is a highly regarded event within the video codec industry, drawing participation from over 40 products developed by leading companies such as AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel. The Canghai V1 chip, which was under development from 2019 until its mass production in 2023, has already been deployed in over 100,000 units across Tencent Cloud and Tencent's proprietary use cases. Furthermore, the new generation Canghai V2 chip has commenced mass production and is scheduled for full availability in the latter half of 2026.
