NVIDIA took the wraps off its Neural Texture Compression (NTC) technology at GTC 2026. This innovative approach leverages compact neural networks to decompress textures within game scenes, achieving a remarkable reduction of up to 85% in video memory usage—all while preserving the original, lossless image quality. To put this into perspective, in the Tuscany Villa scene, video memory consumption plummeted from 6.5GB to a mere 970MB. Not only does NTC technology cut down on memory usage, but it also elevates texture resolution, enabling enhancements up to four times the original quality. Moreover, NVIDIA also presented its Neural Materials technology, which harnesses neural networks to scrutinize material texture data, resulting in a substantial 7.7x acceleration in rendering speed at 1080p resolution, without sacrificing image fidelity. The NTC technology integrates seamlessly with matrix acceleration engines, ensuring no compromise on baseline performance. While no games currently support this cutting-edge technology, its implementation is anticipated in the near future.
