Historically, manufacturers of SSD controllers have mainly relied on architectures such as Arm for chip development. Yet, at the China Flash Market Summit 2026 (CFMS 2026), Samsung introduced a novel SSD controller that operates independently of the Arm architecture. During the summit, Jang Silwan, the Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics, gave a presentation titled "AI System Architecture Evolution: Storage Technologies Driving Future AI." He emphasized that AI is evolving from generative AI to physical AI. The latter necessitates the massive throughput of continuous time-series data, exemplified by high-resolution videos, thus making high-performance storage an essential cornerstone.
To meet this demand, Samsung unveiled the PM1763 PCIe Gen6 SSD, which boasts a controller with both vertical and horizontal scaling architectures. This product optimizes interface performance within a 25W power constraint, delivering twice the I/O performance and 1.6 times the energy efficiency compared to its predecessor. Furthermore, Samsung presented a comprehensive suite of AI storage solutions tailored for PCs and mobile devices, including the QLC SSD BM9K1. By harnessing the power of PCIe Gen5, this SSD is set to revolutionize the computing experience for personal AI PCs.
