Initially, TSMC had outlined a plan to invest $165 billion in the United States. Nevertheless, US Secretary of Commerce Lutnick revealed that, last year, the US government urged TSMC to commit an additional $100 billion towards factory construction, citing TSMC's alleged non-compliance with the 'DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) clause.' Furthermore, he subtly suggested that TSMC is poised to further escalate its investment, a prospect that has intensified apprehensions in Taiwan over the possibility of TSMC evolving into a 'TSMC Made in the USA.' Prior to this, TSMC had already declared an uptick in its investment, elevating the cumulative amount to $165 billion. Lutnick had earlier hinted that the Trump administration might steer TSMC towards investing over $200 billion in the US, and he has recently brought up TSMC's name once more.
