On October 10, SEMI unveiled its most recent report at SEMICON West. The report reveals that from 2026 to 2028, the global expenditure on 300mm fab equipment is projected to soar to $374 billion. This significant investment is a testament to the ongoing trend of fab regionalization. Moreover, it is a direct response to the surging demand for AI chips, which is being propelled by the expansion of data centers and the proliferation of edge devices. Simultaneously, this investment highlights the unwavering resolve of major global regions to bolster semiconductor self-sufficiency. These regions are achieving this goal by constructing localized industrial ecosystems and reconfiguring their supply chains. Looking ahead, the report predicts that in 2025, global spending on 300mm fab equipment will surpass $100 billion for the first time, climbing 7% year-on-year to reach $107 billion. The investment is then expected to continue its upward trajectory, with a projected 9% increase to $116 billion in 2026, a 4% rise to $120 billion in 2027, and a substantial 15% jump to $138 billion in 2028.
