Samsung and SK Hynix Shares Skyrocket to Multi-Year Peaks, Aligning with OpenAI on 'Stargate' Project

On October 2, news emerged that shares of South Korean semiconductor behemoths Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix experienced a substantial upswing on Thursday. Specifically, Samsung Electronics' stock climbed by over 4%, marking its highest point since January 2021, while SK Hynix's shares soared more than 9%, reaching their zenith since the year 2000. Prior to this, both companies had forged a partnership with the prominent artificial intelligence entity, OpenAI, to collectively partake in OpenAI's 'Stargate' project.

In its announcement, OpenAI elucidated that the objective of this collaboration is to augment the supply of cutting-edge memory chips indispensable for next-generation AI, as well as to expand data center capacity within South Korea. Furthermore, OpenAI highlighted that the two semiconductor producers intend to ramp up the production capacity of advanced memory chips, which hold paramount importance for AI models. The announcement of this partnership was timed with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's visit to Seoul, where he engaged in discussions with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and top-tier executives from Samsung and SK Hynix.
