On February 6, 2023, two devastating earthquakes, each measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, struck Turkey, with their epicenters located near Pazarcik and Elbistan, respectively. Some sources also indicate that the epicenter of the second 7.8-magnitude quake was in another part of Kahramanmaras Province. These earthquakes caused extensive damage across the region. Despite the Android Earthquake Alerts System (AEA) being operational at the time, it underestimated the magnitudes of both powerful quakes significantly. For instance, just 7.1 seconds after the initial tremor, the system assessed one of the 7.8-magnitude earthquakes to be between 4.5 and 4.9 in magnitude. This quake, the second largest to hit Turkey in 100 years, inflicted severe casualties and economic damage not only in Turkey but also in neighboring Syria.
