On Thursday, a federal judge in California granted permission to three writers suing Anthropic for copyright infringement, allowing them to file a class action lawsuit on behalf of all American authors whose works were illegally accessed through a pirated library. Anthropic, a competitor to OpenAI backed by Amazon, allegedly utilized its chatbot Claude to download millions of works in a manner reminiscent of the file-sharing platform Napster, thereby violating the Copyright Act. According to available documents, the company downloaded as many as 7 million books from unauthorized libraries.
