As reported by Business Insider, on October 23, AI enterprise Hugging Face revealed the introduction of its latest AI model, Carbon-X. Boasting an impressive 14 billion parameters, this open-source model is tailored explicitly for comprehending and generating DNA sequences. Carbon-X seamlessly merges DNA sequences with natural language, enabling researchers to pose inquiries regarding DNA sequences, forecast the ramifications of mutations, and even create novel DNA sequences. In a series of five benchmark assessments focused on DNA comprehension and generation, Carbon-X surpassed all open-source models evaluated, attaining an average score nearly on par with GPT-6.1 Sol, yet with inference costs merely 1/1800th of its counterpart. The model, developed in partnership with research institutions in Italy and China, was derived by training the existing language model Qwen3-14B on genomic sequences alongside natural language. Carbon-X is anticipated to streamline the process of DNA research for scientists and facilitate the development of innovative gene therapies.
