The swift advancement of generative artificial intelligence has triggered a substantial increase in data center construction across Texas. Yet, a newly released research report underscores a concerning trend: if these data centers continue to draw electricity from the current power grid, which heavily relies on fossil fuels, the significant strides Texas has achieved in air pollution mitigation over the past twenty years could be largely negated. In fact, some pollutant emissions might surge back to levels reminiscent of the early 21st century. Specifically, should all proposed data center projects be integrated into the grid, fine particulate matter pollution stemming from the power sector would surge more than threefold. Nitrogen oxide emissions would escalate by 136%, and carbon dioxide emissions would climb by 90%.

Although renewable energy sources already constitute 56.6% of Texas's power generation mix, the substantial load and fluctuating power demands of AI data centers present formidable challenges to grid stability. This situation has compelled some companies to resort to high-pollution alternatives, such as establishing their own gas-fired power generation facilities. To navigate this complex predicament, Texas is spearheading advancements in energy storage technology and grid modernization. Simultaneously, it is exploring a hybrid power supply model that amalgamates 'renewable energy sources, flexible thermal power, and energy storage' to harmonize the dual imperatives of expanding computing capabilities and transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
