OpenAI has announced that its advertising business will be launched in an additional 26 countries, marking a continued expansion of this nascent business segment. The company will introduce an 8-month advertising product as a key pillar of its new business initiatives. Currently, OpenAI's revenue streams include enterprise contracts, individual subscription services, and usage-based API billing. Free users and Go subscribers in the newly covered countries will now see advertisements displayed separately from ChatGPT's responses. These ads will not influence the model's answers and will be clearly labeled. OpenAI stated that the ads are designed to assist users while ensuring advertisers achieve desired outcomes. The annualized revenue from its advertising business reached $1 billion in August, a significant increase from $100 million in March. Over 100,000 advertisers have now run campaigns on OpenAI's platform. With this expansion, the total number of countries covered by ChatGPT advertising reaches 89. In February, OpenAI pioneered ad testing in the United States, a move that drew mockery from competitor Anthropic, which pledged that its conversational AI, Claude, would remain permanently ad-free. The market widely expects both OpenAI and Anthropic to pursue large-scale IPOs, though neither company has disclosed a timeline for going public. OpenAI aims to go public by 2027, while Anthropic's management has recently been actively engaging with potential investors. Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to introduce more ChatGPT ad formats, performance tracking tools, and delivery methods, exploring new ways for brands to engage naturally with users. Leveraging scenarios where users leverage ChatGPT to explore needs, compare options, and make decisions, the platform aims to help users discover products and services while driving business growth for enterprises.
