On October 17th, news emerged that a long-standing, formidable mathematical challenge of global significance—the three-dimensional Ghys Conjecture—has finally been cracked, after confounding scholars for more than three decades. This milestone was realized through a collaborative effort between a Chinese research team and a cutting-edge domestic AI model, further underscoring the role of artificial intelligence in tackling some of the world's most intricate mathematical puzzles.

According to the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, the team, helmed by Xu Disheng—a visiting scholar at the laboratory and a professor at the Greater Bay Area University—leveraged the power of human-machine synergy to successfully validate the three-dimensional Ghys Conjecture. Their work relied on the InternLM-Sci scientific multimodal large model S2, a sophisticated AI tool designed to handle complex scientific tasks.

In parallel, a separate team led by Professor Dong Bin and Academician Liu Ruochuan from Peking University undertook a rigorous formal verification of the proof, employing the SHEAF framework to ensure its accuracy and robustness. This achievement marks a historic moment, as it represents the first instance where Chinese scientists have harnessed a domestically developed large-scale AI model to resolve a world-class mathematical conundrum.
