The U.S. Department of Energy has unveiled a private investment plan worth hundreds of billions of dollars, aiming to transform a former Cold War-era uranium enrichment site in western Kentucky into a large-scale artificial intelligence and high-performance computing park. Under the plan, Brookfield Asset Management will construct a 1.8-gigawatt data center park, while NextEra Energy will develop complementary 2-gigawatt natural gas power generation facilities and a 2.6-gigawatt battery energy storage system. The project is expected to be built in phases until 2032, creating approximately 8,000 construction jobs and 600 long-term operational positions. However, amid the expanding global investment in AI infrastructure, issues such as financing costs, power supply, and project approvals are emerging as major obstacles to industry development.
