The Character.AI platform, renowned for facilitating dialogues between users and AI-generated virtual personas, has once again found itself entangled in legal controversies within the United States. The Attorney General of Kentucky has leveled accusations stating that, in 2025, certain virtual companions on the platform offered users advice detrimental to their health, including recommendations to fast excessively and even engage in self-harm. Furthermore, following reports of inappropriate conduct by the AI from some users, the customer service responses they received were laced with personal insults and, shockingly, included encouragement to jump off a bridge. These serious allegations are still pending a court hearing. Previously, in 2024, the platform faced a lawsuit from the mother of a 14-year-old boy who tragically took his own life. Although subsequent corrective measures were implemented concerning minors' access to the platform, the emergence of these new accusations casts doubt on the efficacy of its safety protocols.
