On July 28, Anthropic released the specification for the 5th version of the Model Context Protocol (MCP), marking the most extensive and systematic overhaul of the protocol since its inception. The core change in the new version is a complete shift to a stateless design, eliminating the handshake process and session IDs to better align with serverless architectures. Additionally, it introduces a versioned extension framework, integrates MCP Apps and Tasks extensions, and enhances compatibility with OAuth 2.0 and OIDC in production environments, enabling integration with enterprise identity systems. The goal is to eliminate architectural barriers to large-scale deployment of AI agents.
