On July 27th, Yonhap News Agency disclosed that AMD is set to establish an AI research center in South Korea, aiming to cultivate an open AI infrastructure ecosystem. The South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the same day that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for collaboration within the AI chip ecosystem was inked with AMD in San Francisco on the 23rd.

As outlined in the MOU, AMD will establish an AI Center of Excellence in South Korea. This center will bolster technological cooperation among South Korean enterprises, universities, and research entities. Activities will encompass AI chip software development, validation of computing technologies, and collaborative research endeavors. Moreover, it will facilitate partnerships with local AI chip firms in South Korea.

The scope of cooperation will extend to the construction of a heterogeneous AI computing infrastructure. This will involve integrating AMD's CPUs and GPUs with South Korean AI chips (NPUs), which excel in the inference domain. Furthermore, both parties intend to collaboratively construct an open AI computing ecosystem, actively encouraging the involvement of South Korean companies. Cooperation areas will span memory, networking, servers, and software.
