According to TechCrunch, the $1.5 billion copyright infringement class-action lawsuit settlement involving Anthropic has received final approval from Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Previously, the court ruled that Anthropic had unlawfully downloaded and stored millions of copyrighted books from pirated websites to train its large language models. On July 20, 2026, the two parties reached a settlement, with Anthropic agreeing to pay $1.5 billion in damages, payable in four non-refundable installments. Authors and publishers of nearly 500,000 books will receive compensation of approximately $3,000 per work. Additionally, Anthropic is required to destroy all original files downloaded from pirated websites and any derivative copies thereof.
