The development of AI computing power networks has sparked a substantial surge in demand for optical fiber cables. This, in turn, has fueled a sharp rise in the prices of optical fiber preforms (hereafter referred to as preforms) since the onset of 2025. Notably, the quoted price for general-purpose G.652D preforms has escalated by more than 180%. Meanwhile, for G.657.A2 preforms, which are utilized in high-density cabling for data centers, the price per equivalent core kilometer has skyrocketed from the range of 22 to 30 yuan to 160 yuan, marking an increase of nearly 550%. Several publicly traded companies have attributed the ongoing price hike of preforms to a combination of factors, including an imbalance between supply and demand and the cascading effect of upstream raw material price increases. They predict that the shortage will persist until 2027.
