Emily Dalton Smith, the Meta executive overseeing the company’s core AI restructuring initiative and the enhancement of internal AI tools, is set to leave her position. Previously, she held roles as Vice President of Product Management and Threads Product Lead, and she was also in charge of the enterprise-level AI assistant, Metamate. Meta is currently pushing forward with a company-wide reorganization, aiming to place AI at the heart of both its products and internal operations, with a focus on developing AI agents capable of independently performing tasks traditionally done by humans. However, this strategy has faced significant internal resistance, with employees voicing concerns that management is asking them to create AI systems that could eventually replace their own roles. The restructuring plan includes laying off 10% of the workforce, reassigning an equal proportion of employees to new departments, and implementing mouse-tracking software to monitor productivity. Dalton Smith’s team was responsible for AI-related interfaces, platform components, and other key areas, with plans to integrate capabilities from various existing AI systems into Metamate, enabling it to perform tasks such as in-depth research and rapid prototyping. She will remain in her role temporarily to oversee the team transition alongside CTO Andrew Bosworth. Bosworth acknowledged that the recent large-scale layoffs and adjustments to AI projects have caused morale among long-tenured employees to drop to near-record lows.
