As US companies embark on their narratives of 'AI-driven transformation,' a set of eye-catching data has surfaced. According to the latest layoff report from human resources consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, US employers announced a staggering 97,006 job cuts in May 2026—the highest figure for that month since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Of these, 38,579 positions were eliminated due to the impact of artificial intelligence, constituting nearly 40% of the total layoffs for the month and cementing AI as the primary driver of job reductions for the third consecutive month. This also sets a new monthly record since tracking of 'AI-related layoffs' began separately in 2023.
