The Ministry of State Security has released a security alert, highlighting that amid the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) applications, 'AI relay stations'—platforms offering access to a variety of domestic and international AI models—have emerged across China. However, the quality of these services varies widely, with some lacking proper operational credentials and adequate security measures, thereby posing risks like user privacy breaches and unauthorized data resale. Serving as intermediaries that aggregate APIs from multiple AI model providers, 'AI relay stations' offer advantages such as seamless model switching, cost-effectiveness, convenient payment options, and the ability to circumvent usage limitations. Yet, they also introduce potential hazards including data privacy violations, skewed model outputs, the implantation of malicious remote controls, and unregulated data exfiltration. In response, the Cyberspace Administration of China has initiated a dedicated campaign named 'Clean Cyberspace - Tackling AI Application Irregularities,' urging users to opt for reputable platforms, enhance their security practices, swiftly address any anomalies, and report any suspicious activities.
