Stanford University recently announced the merger of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (Stanford HAI) with the Stanford Data Science Initiative (Stanford Data Science). The new entity will retain the name Stanford HAI. Computer scientist James Landay will serve as the director of the new institution, while Fei-Fei Li will step down as co-director and assume the role of special adviser to the president on AI. She will also co-chair the advisory board alongside former president John Hennessy. The primary goal of this merger is to address the rapid advancement of AI by integrating resources to enhance the new institution's influence. HAI will provide support through its talent and funding networks, while SDS will contribute computational power and foundational data science expertise. The newly established HAI will focus on three key areas: interdisciplinary discovery, educational transformation, and research on societal impacts, adhering to principles of openness and actively engaging in international collaboration. Within Stanford University, this merger will consolidate resources such as graduate fellowship programs and research centers, streamlining administrative processes. However, the actual effectiveness of the merger remains to be seen. Nonetheless, this restructuring undoubtedly offers new insights into resource allocation for research universities in the AI era.
