Elon Musk has initiated legal proceedings against OpenAI, its CEO Sam Altman, and several other parties, demanding a staggering $100 billion in damages. The lawsuit is scheduled to commence in late April 2026 at the Federal Court in Oakland, California. Musk alleges that OpenAI has strayed from its initial non-profit mission, pivoting instead towards a profit-driven commercial model.

Representing Altman as the lead attorney is William Savitt, a partner at a prestigious Wall Street law firm. Savitt is no stranger to high-stakes legal battles against Musk, having previously secured a victory over him in the Twitter acquisition lawsuit. During that trial, Savitt's tenacious cross-examinations pushed Musk to the brink, resulting in several instances where Musk lost his temper and delivered contradictory statements, ultimately tarnishing his credibility.

The upcoming trial is anticipated to span roughly four weeks, and its outcome could significantly impact OpenAI's plans for an initial public offering (IPO), which is aiming for a valuation close to $1 trillion.
