On April 28, 2026, the European Commission officially put forward a set of measures to Google, mandating the tech giant to grant AI competitors access to the core functionalities of its Android mobile operating system, in line with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). These core functionalities encompass voice activation, the ability to invoke search tools, and seamless integration with other Android applications. The initiative is designed to dismantle Google's stronghold on the search market and foster a climate of fair competition.
The proposed measures delve into the specifics, outlining eligibility criteria for entities that stand to benefit from data sharing, delineating the scope of data to be shared, detailing the methods and frequency of such sharing, emphasizing the importance of personal data anonymization, setting FRAND (Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory) pricing parameters, and establishing procedural norms to ensure beneficiaries can access data in a streamlined manner. The European Commission is set to render a final, binding decision on this matter by July 27.
