Meta Platforms has revealed its intention to lay off 10% of its workforce on May 20, a decision that will impact roughly 8,000 employees. In addition, the company is putting a hold on hiring for 6,000 previously planned job openings. This strategic move is designed to boost operational efficiency and counterbalance the substantial investments Meta is making in the artificial intelligence (AI) domain. Meta expects its capital expenditures to soar to unprecedented levels this year, following the announcement of several multi-billion-dollar agreements with AI partners in recent months. The company is also motivating its staff to utilize AI agents to streamline their work processes. Meta's Chief Human Resources Officer explained that the premature disclosure of the plan was a result of information leaks. Since the start of the year, apprehensions about layoffs have been circulating among Meta's employees, especially given the cost-cutting measures being implemented by other leading tech firms. At present, Meta boasts a workforce of nearly 79,000 individuals and is set to unveil its first-quarter financial results in the upcoming week.
