On March 31, The New York Times disclosed that, in spite of Trump’s efforts to dissuade states from imposing regulations on AI, authorities in California and several other states have proceeded to implement their own strategies to set up protective regulatory frameworks for AI. This month, Trump cautioned states against meddling in AI governance, with the White House policy directives highlighting that divergent state regulations could compromise U.S. innovation prowess and jeopardize its preeminent position in the worldwide AI race. Nevertheless, California Governor Gavin Newsom brushed aside the caution and signed an executive order mandating AI firms engaged in contracts with the state government to institute safety and privacy protocols and comply with California statutes designed to mitigate AI-associated hazards.
