Meta Platforms Inc. has unveiled its ambitious plan to introduce four generations of cutting-edge, in-house AI chips by the close of 2027. These include the MTIA 300, MTIA 400, MTIA 450, and MTIA 500. This strategic initiative forms a crucial part of Meta's broader plan to diversify its hardware resources, with the overarching goal of diminishing its dependence on external chip producers and achieving cost savings. The company is steadfast in pursuing a dual-pronged approach, encompassing both "the procurement of traditional hardware" and "investment in specialized custom silicon". Presently, the MTIA 300 has already commenced production, while the MTIA 400 has successfully undergone laboratory testing and is now transitioning into the deployment phase. Looking ahead, the MTIA 450 and MTIA 500 are slated for large-scale deployment in 2027. Specifically, the MTIA 450 is anticipated to make its debut in the early part of 2027, followed by the MTIA 500, which is expected to be launched approximately six months thereafter. Yee Jiun Song, the Vice President of Engineering at Meta, has indicated that the company will reassess the chip deployment roadmap in light of the evolving nature of workloads.
