On the 13th, Onoda Kimiko, Japan's Minister for AI Strategy, announced at a press conference that the AI video generation model service Seedance 2.0—which is funded by Chinese investors and developed by ByteDance—has sparked concerns regarding copyright violations and the creation of unsuitable content. It has been highlighted that the service enables the unrestricted generation of videos featuring, among others, Japanese anime characters. Onoda stated that the government would accelerate its efforts to assess the situation and disclosed its intention to initiate an investigation. Presently, numerous videos created by this AI have already proliferated across social media platforms, with some even depicting figures that bear a resemblance to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Onoda confirmed her awareness of the issue and underscored that the government would take decisive action if copyrighted works were utilized without the consent of their owners. She also mentioned that the government would engage in discussions with ByteDance to resolve the matter. Additionally, the unauthorized utilization of pre-existing characters or real-life individuals by other generative AI services to produce images or videos has emerged as a societal concern.
