Last month, Amazon made the somber announcement of laying off over 14,000 employees, a move that reverberated across nearly all its business segments, with engineers feeling the most severe impact. Out of the more than 4,700 job cuts spanning four states, almost 40% were in engineering and technical positions. Amazon has now become part of the ongoing trend in the tech industry this year, where numerous companies have resorted to layoffs. Even though the industry has witnessed an increase in cash reserves and profits, a staggering 231 tech firms have, in total, laid off close to 113,000 employees. Amazon has clarified that it is reallocating resources towards artificial intelligence (AI) and underscored the necessity of sustaining innovation, despite the substantial decrease in its engineering workforce.
