As reported by Business Insider, the data annotation team responsible for training Grok at Elon Musk's AI venture, xAI, has undergone substantial staffing upheavals since September. Specifically, last week, the Slack accounts of no fewer than nine senior staff members were deactivated. Furthermore, on September 12th, the company laid off over 500 employees, shrinking the team from 1,500 to roughly 900 members. Diego Pacini, a high school graduate from 2023 who joined xAI in January of this year, has now assumed leadership of the data annotation team. On September 15th, Pacini chaired a meeting during which he announced that there were no immediate plans for further layoffs. However, shortly thereafter, more than 100 additional employees were let go.
