Nearly a decade after its initial promise, Tesla's Robotaxi service has finally hit the streets. On June 22, local time in the United States, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the official launch of the Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, with a flat fare of $4.20 per ride. The initial operating fleet comprises approximately 10 to 20 vehicles, all based on the Model Y and equipped with Tesla's proprietary visual perception system and Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. The service is currently limited to designated areas in south-central Austin and operates daily from 6 am to midnight. This pilot service is by invitation only, and Tesla has already dispatched invites to select employees, car owners, and Powerwall users. Each Robotaxi features a safety monitor in the front passenger seat, along with biometric sensors, to ensure the utmost safety for passengers.
