On September 7th, Li Auto (02015.HK) unveiled the latest strides in its ambitious plan to "outfit every vehicle model with in-house developed batteries." Having successfully navigated its initial startup phase, Li Auto is now embarking on a new chapter, dedicated to erecting technological barriers through unwavering commitment to R&D investment.

The company laid out its technological blueprint in 2020, with a resolute decision to independently master two pivotal technologies for intelligent electric vehicles: batteries (cells) and chips. Presently, Li Auto's in-house developed batteries have already been incorporated into the Li L8, Li L6, and Li i8 models, with the overarching goal of achieving full-scale integration across its entire vehicle lineup.

In the fourth quarter of this year, the inaugural batch of the new-generation Li MEGA vehicles will be powered by CATL's cutting-edge 5C ternary lithium batteries. However, a complete transition to Li Auto's proprietary batteries is earmarked for once production preparations reach full maturity. Similarly, the Li i9 will undergo a seamless switch to in-house batteries following the successful ramp-up of its battery production.

Moreover, Li Auto is set to introduce the 2026 Li i6 in the fourth quarter of this year, boasting the company's own 5C battery technology and self-developed Mach chip. Pre-orders for this innovative model will commence at the end of September, with deliveries slated to begin in early November, marking another significant milestone in Li Auto's journey towards technological self-sufficiency.
