Tesla Robotaxi Barrels Through Barriers in U.S., Keeps Going: Execs Had Touted Flawless Safety Record

Recently, a Tesla Robotaxi operating in driverless mode—and without a safety operator on board—plowed through plastic barriers at an intersection in Austin, Texas, U.S. These barriers had been in place since at least February 2024, yet the vehicle crashed through them and continued on its journey. Although the vehicle's sensors did detect the barriers, the incident has ignited debate over the vehicle's route-planning algorithms and decision-making processes. At present, it remains uncertain what exactly triggered the vehicle's actions—whether it was an issue with the perception system, a misinterpretation of the lane configuration, or intervention from a remote operator. Previously, Tesla's Vice President of AI had boasted that the Robotaxi had racked up over 380,000 miles of unsupervised driving across six cities in two states, maintaining a supposedly 'flawless' safety record. Whether this incident will find its way into regulatory reports is yet to be determined.
