Self-driving mobility service provider Waymo has incurred parking violation fines exceeding $9,000 for its autonomous taxis operating in Austin, Texas. Out of this total, $7,433 has already been settled, while around $1,892 remains outstanding. These fines, stemming from 83 tickets, encompass infractions such as parking in tow-away zones, neglecting to pay meter fees, with the most substantial single fine being for parking in a designated disabled parking space. Moreover, local police and residents have documented numerous incidents where Waymo vehicles have caused traffic congestion and obstructed railway crossings. Local parking enforcement authorities are responsible for issuing civil citations for such violations, and residents have the option to lodge complaints. Waymo has stated that it reviews each ticket and may choose to appeal; in fact, two fines related to traffic obstruction have already been overturned. Waymo also asserts that, statistically, its vehicles are safer than those driven by humans. On July 8, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sent a letter, urging developers of autonomous vehicles to ensure that their vehicles adhere more closely to on-site instructions from emergency responders. The letter also pointed out that part of the problem stems from the self-driving taxis' inability to identify compliant parking areas.
