On June 23, a report from the tech news outlet TechCrunch revealed that a fatal car crash occurred in Katy, Texas, in the United States, over the past weekend. In this incident, a Tesla vehicle collided with a residence, leading to the tragic death of a 76-year-old woman and sparking widespread concerns regarding Tesla's assisted driving technology. Tesla responded on Monday afternoon, clarifying that during the accident, the driver had pressed the accelerator pedal to its full extent (100%) within a residential zone, thereby overriding the autopilot system through manual operation. At the moment of impact, the vehicle's speed soared to 73 miles per hour, and the accelerator pedal remained depressed even after the collision. Tesla CEO Elon Musk also underscored that the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system is designed to operate at lower speeds on residential streets, emphasizing that this was a high-speed collision incident. Presently, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has initiated a special investigation into the crash to determine the cause.
