Waymo has acquired a large 5,500-acre vehicle testing site in Arizona for $220 million. The site was previously owned by a Delaware shell company associated with Apple. Apple purchased the site for $125 million in 2021 and leased it for several years. It was formerly a vehicle testing center for Fiat Chrysler. The testing site is well-equipped, featuring urban simulation roads, vehicle dynamic testing areas, circular tracks, and high-speed simulated highways. Waymo will utilize these facilities to test and optimize its autonomous driving systems in a controlled environment, conducting passenger ride tests, vehicle motion control tests, operator training, and new testing projects. This acquisition further enhances Waymo's network of closed testing sites. Currently, Waymo also uses the Castle Air Force Base in California and the Transportation Research Center in Ohio, though neither is as large as the new site. Waymo is fully expanding its fleet, with a total of nearly 4,000 vehicles. It recently launched a new autonomous van developed in collaboration with Zeekr and put it into passenger operation, planning to annually produce tens of thousands of autonomous taxis, including the Zeekr van and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Zeekr vehicles will be shipped to Waymo's Arizona factory for the installation of autonomous driving systems. Waymo's commercial presence in Phoenix and Maricopa County continues to grow. Since 2017, it has been testing in Chandler, a suburb of Phoenix, and its services now cover more than ten U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Austin, and Atlanta.
