On May 17, CNBC reported that Canadian dealers have displayed remarkable enthusiasm since the advent of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) imports. Michael McGillivray, who oversees 10 auto dealerships across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, is of the opinion that the introduction of Chinese EVs could significantly reshape the Canadian automotive market. In April of this year, he visited the Beijing Auto Show, where he had the opportunity to personally test-drive models slated for potential export to Canada, expressing high commendation for them. Presently, Canada permits the annual import of 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles, which are subject to a most-favored-nation tariff rate of 6.1%. Moreover, the quota volume is scheduled to increase incrementally each year. Farid Ahmed, CEO of DSMA, an auto dealer brokerage firm located in a Toronto suburb, mentioned that they have received inquiries from nearly 400 Canadian dealers, all eager to represent Chinese brands.
