On May 2, foreign media reported that the German automotive industry has called for an urgent de-escalation of the US-EU tariff dispute and urged both sides to immediately commence negotiations. Previously, Trump had stated plans to raise EU automotive tariffs to 25%, citing the EU's failure to fully implement the trade agreement reached with the United States. Hildegard Müller, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry, emphasized in an email statement on Saturday that US-EU trade agreements require mutual compliance, and the EU should ultimately ratify its portion of the agreement reached last summer. An EU spokesperson responded that the EU is advancing its commitments in accordance with standard legislative procedures and is continuously updating the US administration on progress. The spokesperson also stated that the European Commission will demand a clear explanation from the US side while reserving all options to safeguard EU interests.
