Recently, two prominent automotive executives have voiced their criticisms of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models. Scott Meynard, the head of Polestar Australia, holds the view that PHEV models fall short of aligning with the brand's core positioning. Meanwhile, Renault CEO Luca de Meo went as far as to label certain PHEVs as "pseudo-electrification," asserting that they fall flat in achieving carbon reduction objectives. Instead, he places greater optimism in extended-range technology.
Research conducted by the International Council on Clean Transportation has shed light on the fact that PHEV models, in reality, cover shorter distances using pure electric power and end up consuming more fuel. At present, Europe is in the process of tightening regulations concerning PHEV models. However, an increase in battery capacity has the unintended consequence of diminishing the efficiency of fuel mode utilization.
