On Saturday (local time), a significant power outage swept across San Francisco, USA, impacting roughly 125,000 households and businesses. Around one-third of the city was plunged into darkness for the entire day, effectively bringing the public transportation network to a standstill. Consequently, Waymo's autonomous taxi service was temporarily suspended. A spokesperson for the company explained that their immediate focus is on ensuring passenger safety and supporting emergency response initiatives. Since August 2021, Waymo has been conducting trials of its autonomous taxi service in San Francisco and, in November 2022, introduced a round-the-clock driverless ride-hailing option. Furthermore, in April 2023, five of its self-driving taxis were brought to a halt due to thick fog, which disrupted traffic flow. At that time, the company assured that it would improve service performance through software upgrades.
