Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has once again voiced his criticism of LiDAR technology in the realm of autonomous driving, stressing that Tesla stands firm in its commitment to a pure camera-based perception system. Musk emphasized that LiDAR and radar can compromise safety due to data discrepancies and struggle to navigate effectively in adverse weather conditions, including rain, snow, and dust. To illustrate his point, Musk cited Waymo as an example, highlighting that systems reliant on LiDAR exhibit limited performance in complex road scenarios and unfavorable weather conditions. Furthermore, Musk disclosed that Tesla had previously developed its own radar technology but found it to be less effective compared to cameras, ultimately leading to a complete shift towards a vision-only approach.
