On September 8, TrendForce's latest survey of the mobile phone industry unveiled that global smartphone production attained 275 million units in the second quarter of 2026. This represents an 8% year-on-year decrease; however, the decline was less pronounced than previously projected, and the overall performance outstripped market expectations. According to TrendForce's analysis, the quarter's better-than-anticipated results were mainly attributable to two key factors: Firstly, some consumers, worried that escalating memory prices would keep pushing up the overall cost of devices and result in further price increases for new models in 2027, opted to buy smartphones earlier than planned. Secondly, certain brands had overly slashed their production plans in response to rising memory costs, but are now revising these plans upwards as market conditions stabilize. In light of these developments, TrendForce has adjusted its full-year 2026 smartphone production forecast from the initial 1.05 billion units to 1.07 billion units, with the annual decline narrowing from 16% to 14%.
