On August 20, 2026, amid the US Navy’s Rim of the Pacific Exercise 2026 (RIMPAC 2026), which took place near Hawaii, Lockheed Martin and Saildrone achieved a significant milestone by successfully carrying out a groundbreaking live-fire demonstration. In this event, a Saildrone Surveyor-class Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) launched two Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles (JAGM). The USV, measuring 65 feet (about 20 meters) in length and powered by sails, was outfitted with a twin launcher for JAGM missiles. It received target data via the US Navy’s ARES remote combat system and coordinated with the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group. This collaborative effort led to the successful strike on a simulated high-speed surface target vessel. This demonstration was a result of the strategic partnership forged between the two companies in October 2025, with Lockheed Martin investing $50 million in Saildrone. During the demonstration, the USV also demonstrated its passive electronic warfare capabilities. It worked in conjunction with an MH-60S helicopter to detect, classify, and identify simulated threat radar systems. Looking ahead, the two companies have plans to integrate more sophisticated kinetic capabilities onto the larger Spectre-class USV.
