Google, working in tandem with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), has ingeniously repurposed discarded Pixel smartphones into cost-effective computing clusters. The study revealed that the combined computational prowess of 25 to 50 vintage smartphones can stand toe-to-toe with that of a dual-socket server-grade CPU. Initially, the research team stripped the phones of non-essential components, such as screens and batteries, retaining solely the motherboards outfitted with System-on-Chips (SoCs). Following this, they swapped out the Android operating system for a Linux distribution widely employed in data centers, eliminated superfluous consumer-oriented software, and implemented orchestration tools like Kubernetes.
